Fat Ultralights Deadline Looming

Attention Light-Sport Aircraft Owners and Pilots - Individuals converting aircraft into Experimental Light-Sport Aircraft (ELSA) per 14 CFC Part 21.191(i)(1) have until January 31, 2008 to register and obtain an airworthiness certificate!

All non-CFR part 103-compliant ultralight aircraft (‘fat ultralights’) must be registered and certificated in the experimental category for the purpose of operating Light Sport Aircraft by January 31, 2008. http://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/faa_regulations/

On July 27, 2004, FAA detailed new rules for the manufacture, certification, operation, and maintenance of Light Sport Aircraft (Docket No. FAA-2001-11133, 69 FR 44772, July 27, 2004).  http://dms.dot.gov (docket number FAA-2004-11133)

Existing aircraft that do not meet 14 CFR Part 103 requirements and instructors that wish to continue providing instruction in their aircraft in the Light Sport Aircraft category must register their aircraft as described in 14CFR part 47 and obtain an airworthiness certificate for their aircraft by January 31, 2008.

Contact FAA’s Light-Sport Aircraft Branch for more information.

In order to have the best possible chance of getting your light sport aircraft registered and certificated by the January 31, 2008 deadline, FAA recommends that owners and operators begin the process as soon as possible.  By August 15, 2007, submit your aircraft registration to the FAA and contact your local Experimental Light Sport Aircraft Designated Airworthiness Representative (ELSA DAR) to schedule an airworthiness inspection for no later than October 1, 2007. By November 30, 2007, you should submit your airworthiness certification package to a FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO), a FAA Manufacturing Inspection District Office (MIDO) or your local ELSA DAR.
