Rotax 582 Overhaul Expense Cut More Than $600
Sebring, FLORIDA / October 3, 2007 - Engine overhaul is serious business. Most sport pilots know this but commonly start the process in the spring as a new season of flying arrives. Therefore springtime ushers in a potential for delay right when pilots are most anxious to get flying again. Now, Lockwood Aviation Repair (LAR) has a new cost-savings opportunity for those who act starting immediately and through the slower winter months when pilots tend to do less flying.
The new Rebuild Kit from Rotax lowered the price of the overhaul considerably, resulting in a $600 savings to customers," said Kerry Yunck, manager of the Lockwood Aviation Repair engine rebuild enterprise. A longtime LAR associate, Yunck has managed or personally done many hundreds of such overhauls. Turnaround time varies depending on the numbers of engines undergoing overhaul, but typically runs from one week to three weeks.
The $2,239 Special includes the new factory rebuild kit, eight hours of expert labor covering full disassembly, inspection, a very thorough cleaning, special blast cleaning of all aluminum parts with a special plastic media that does not damage the lightweight material, and reassembly. Components include a new crankshaft assembly, new pistons, new top-end bearings, a complete gasket kit, new rubber carburetor sockets and clamps, new spark plugs, and new spark plug caps. For an additional $50, LAR can upgrade older (silver head) Rotax 582 engines to the "Blue Head" models that feature a new ceramic rotary seal for the water pump. Optionally, another hour's labor includes a teardown and inspection of the gearbox. The Rebuild Special kit does not include new wrist pins; if needed new parts will add $42.43 each.
"When we send the engine back to the owner," reported Yunck, "they will have a professionally overhauled engine that - when maintained properly using Rotax checklists (available at http://www.rotax-aircraft-engines.com) - will have the same TBO as a new engine: 300 hours or five years of flying, whichever comes first." To schedule your Rotax 582 Rebuild Special, call Kerry directly in the engine shop at 863-655-6229. Note that free technical support for Rotax aircraft engines is offered only from 9:00-10:00 a.m. and 2:00-3:00 p.m. Eastern Time. However, calls about the Rebuild Special are accepted 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. five days a week.
